Interscan Navigation Systems
(Interscan) is the only company in the world dedicated to the manufacture of ground based navigation aids. It has been in the business since its inception in the mid 1900's and represents the ongoing business of the Aerospace activities of AWA (its successors).
Interscan in based in Sydney and designs, manufactures and sells ground
based infrastructure support equipment for the aerospace transportation
sector from its modern manufacturing facilities in the suburb of Rydalmere. Interscan offers its customers full installation, training and support services, as well as support and repairs of existing equipment. In addition to Sydney, the company has representative offices in
Beijing and Madrid.
On 31 August 2007, Indra Sistemas of Madrid, Spain acquired 100% of Interscan Navigation Systems. Indra is the premier Information Technology company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe and Latin America. It is ranked as the second largest European company in its sector according to stock market capitalisation, as well as being the second largest Spanish company with the most investment in R&D&I.
In 2008, revenues reached €2,38 billion, of which a third came from international markets. The company employs more the 29,000 professionals and has major projects in more than 100 countries.

Heritage
Interscan's successor, Amalgamated Wireless of Australasia (AWA) was a major Australian electronics company which was founded in 1913,
and has been involved in many areas of electronics, defence and
communications over many years.
AWA was responsible in
conjunction with Guiglielmo Marconi for the first radio transmissions
from England to Australia in 1918, designed and manufactured the
world’s first mobile radio in 1922 and was a pioneer in radio and
television in Australia and New Zealand. AWA has been involved in radio
navigation aids since the late 1950s. The main products were DVOR and
DME.
Products
The range of products available from Interscan is:
- DVOR (Doppler VHF Omni-Range)
is a ground-based radio navigation aid, transmitting an omnidirectional
signal that enables aircraft to determine its bearing relative to the
location of the beacon.
- DME (Distance Measuring Equipment)
is a ground based navigation aid for use by aircraft, at an airport or
en route and is one of the primary navaids in an airway system.
Interscan (then AWA) pioneered the use of this technology in the late
1940s.
- Other related products
such as met equipment, ATC voice switching systems, NDB, ILS,
SSR, diesel generators, etc, can be supplied as part of projects
requiring a full range of products.
